It's on the Qt!
Welcome to this special Philadelphia primary edition of QUEERtimes Weekly . . . for our non-Philadelphia readers please bear with us as we share some voter information to our local readers.

QUEERtimes offered each candidate running for to be Philadelphia's next District Attorney an opportunity to answer the following question:

Why should Philadelphia's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community consider supporting you for the office of District Attorney?

Here are their responses:

Dan McCaffery Dan McCaffery
Democrat for DA

I think that the LGBT community in Philadelphia should choose to support my candidacy for a number of reasons and I am confident that my record and policies speak for themselves with regard to my overwhelming support of the LGBT community. First and foremost, I would like to say that I am the only candidate who has gone on record, numerous times, in support of full marriage equality. No other candidate in this race has said, unequivocally that they support the rights of every LGBT person in the City and the Commonwealth to marry the person that they love and choose to share their life with.

I think this distinction is incredibly important because while the District Attorney has a limited role in passing marriage equality legislation, the District Attorney is the City's top cop and the 370 attorneys who work in the DA's office look to him or her as a measuring stick for what is right and what is wrong in this City. Moreover, my candidacy is about serving the people of Philadelphia as their District Attorney and not using the office to catapult to a state-wide office. With alums such as Chief Justice Ron Castille, Governor Ed Rendell, and Senator Arlen Specter, the office of Philadelphia District Attorney has a long record of helping to launch state-wide candidates. I know that my heart and my motivations lie here with Philadelphia and I know that I speak for and to the citizens of this City when I say that completely equal treatment of all LGBT folks is an absolute must.

The other reason that I believe that Philadelphia's LGBT community should consider supporting my candidacy is that given my unique commitment to equality and equal treatment for all Philadelphians, I am the only candidate who will create a specialized LGBT Unit as part of the Victim Services Division.  I hope to comprise this new unit of a lesbian and a gay man who will serve as victim advocates, assisting all LGBT victims of crime.  These two advocates will be experienced in serving LGBT victims of sexual assault.  We will use the full power of the District Attorney's office to influence legislators to pass laws that better protect all citizens of Philadelphia, including the immediate restoration of mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity to the commonwealth's Ethnic Intimidation Act.

I believe in this city. I believe that the office of the District Attorney can make a difference to all Philadelphians, especially those such as the LGBT community who face unique challenges on a daily basis. Those who want to corrupt our city, deal drugs, sell illegal handguns, or commit violent crimes should know that I pledge to make this office meet its potential. I will be the voice of the victims, and make all Philadelphians proud of what we accomplish.
