To moviegoers, especially females, this is certain to be a cinematic experience of ‘Amazonian’ proportions. But given the fight of it all, is Wonder Woman’s silver screen debut worth reverence in today’s modern feminist society; a society that the character has, to a great degree, influenced?

Let’s start with esthetics. Aside from her long, dark brown locks, which along her Maybelline made-up face, magically stays intact throughout the film’s most gruesome battle sequences, Wonder Woman has come a long way from her pin-up inspired beginnings. The cheek-exposing bikini has been replaced with a metallic-blue peplum, showing just a sliver of her upper thighs in the front. In short, her privates are now completely covered.

Also, Gal Gadot, who gives a highly charismatic performance, is not as endowed as her animated predecessors. Indeed, modern feminism has won the war on the superhero’s appearance. However, the film’s main trope isn’t exactly comparable to recent feminist efforts like the Women’s March.

The trope in question is Wonder Woman’s overall motivation. Keeping in line with the common rule of superheroes, her goal is to save the world in some shape or form. From her childhood beginnings as Diana, Princess of Themyscira, an all-female led and populated nation (a very modern feminist concept, though originally created in the World War II era), she wants nothing to do but to train and fight. But, like most turning points in film, when a character’s wants transition to needs, Wonder Woman decides about three-quarters into the film that she wants to risk her ambitions for the love of a lackluster spy, played by Chris Pine.

Surely, Pine is easy on the eyes, which explains his casting in the film, but this speaks to the larger point here, which is to what extent does Wonder Woman symbolize women’s independence?

With the most recent U.S. presidential election leaving a huge misogynistic stain on society, women have upped the ante in terms of their power, possibilities, and stances on their rights. By Wonder Woman favoring the company of men, who are useless to her and not equal in power, the decision to do so doesn’t lend itself to women’s liberation.

The reason why the film, and the character in which it is based on, is as such is because both were created and conceived by men, with the exception of Patty Jenkins who serves as the film’s director, but only by necessity. Nonetheless, this does not make Wonder Woman or her live-action adventure unworthy. If anything, they are very telling to how women view men. Despite the annoying assertions of masculinity and its toll on decision-making, women do like and seek male validation.

At the end of the day, regardless of whatever choice is made on behalf of Wonder Woman, what will inspire women and men alike is her strength, which is amplified by the fact of her gender.

When asked of a female friend, who is a huge Wonder Woman fan, what is it about her that you admire, in so many words she replied, “Wonder Woman is not only recognizable, she is a leader… other male superheroes listen to her, respect her, and follow her lead… She doesn’t feel comfortable in being an alien like Superman, or rich like Batman, knowing that all you attained is because of wealth… She is and does things that EVERY woman wishes they can do and be.
