What's an ex-gay? Can it happen to just anyone? To you and to me?
Seriously, though, one of the most disturbing things to come out of the anti-queer movement is the promotion of conversion therapy (aka: reparative therapy or sexual reorientation therapy), where individuals are told that they can change (read: heal) their sexual orientation and live "normal healthy heterosexual" lives.
The majority of the supporters and practitioners of this belief stand on the fundamentalist far right where we queers are considered an abomination.
These anti-queer individuals and groups believe that if you just try hard and embrace the "truth" you will be able to live a "normal/natural" life. Some theories are downright foolish such as recommending that gay men drink Gatorade in an effort to make them more masculine. Others suggest not wearing Calvin Klein underwear because it is deemed "too gay."
Groups such as the National Association of Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), Exodus International and Focus on the Family tell us that it's simple - not living a "gay lifestyle," identify ourselves "ex-gay," get married, have kids and live a heterosexual life. All will be good with God and nature. They tell us that we will struggle, that it wouldn't be easy, but it will all be worthwhile when we are h |
