Taking Control of Our Political Future; Say NO to Arlen Specter James Duggan
copyright 2009
|
I've written in the past how politically I'm an
independent, embracing Aristotle's belief that the truth is found in the middle
of two extremes. Over the years through my search for that all elusive
political mean, I've developed some very strong opinions of certain things I do
not like about the political establishment.
The pea under my mattress right now is backroom deals where career politicians
broker agreements, abuse political machines, and wavier on their "principled"
positions solely to advance or save their political careers. In the last six
months, we have found a new poster-child for these shenanigans in the person of
Arlen Specter.
The fact that Specter, a Republican United States Senator for Pennsylvania for the past 29 years, became a
Democrat to "secure" his reelection and his political career is a clear example
of party politics out of control and personal interest above public good.
It appears that Specter's most compelling motivation for switching parties was
so he could keep his Senate seat and save his 29-year political career. Specter
was being challenged by conservative Pat Toomey and, in all likelihood, would
have lost to him. To save himself, Specter made deals with the Democratic
leaders in Washington
and his home state and switched parties.
This is one of the problems we as Americans face; back room deals that support
party politics above the ideals for which the party claims to hold. This type
of action is making us all cynics as more and more Americans distance
themselves further from our political process and the two party system.
Specters' switch to the Democratic Party should be rejected as being both
dishonest and a detriment to that which is necessary in our fight for equality.
Specter, the "DE-publican," was considered an independent Republican moderate;
as a Democrat he is completely unacceptable. His party switching (good for him
and the Democratic leadership) is a slap in the face to those who feel that
Specter is not the best candidate who will best represent Pennsylvania's queer citizens and those who
believe in our right to full equality.
Specter's record on queer equality is only "okay" at best. Human
Rights Campaign gave him only a 67% rating out of 100% when it comes to
supporting queer civil rights. Sixty-seven percent--and now he's going around
trying to tell us he is the new champion for queer rights! Disingenuous
at best! He's already proven he will do and say just about anything to
save his 29 years in the US Senate hoping to persuade the voters to extend it
to 36 years.
Now I must bring up a sensitive subject but one that must be discussed.
Specter's health has been severely compromised with two bouts of Hodgkin's
lymphoma (cancer.) Specter will be 80 years old by next year's primary.
There is a better chance than not that the Senator would not survive another 6
years in office. This might be acceptable if we were guaranteed that we
would have a Democratic Governor, but the odds are against that. There can be
no guarantee that a Democrat will be the next Governor of the Keystone State.
If history rings true, Pennsylvania
is more likely than not to have a Republican as its next governor. With
this likely scenario we could very easily lose Specter's seat (if he is
reelected) to a Republican. It seems the Democratic leaders when making
their deals with Specter were seeking only short term goals. Did they not
consider these factors?
We do not have the luxury to think short term. We must take control of our
political future.
It is time to make room for a new generation of leadership. Specter has
served well but now it is time for him to do what is right and step aside and
get out of the race. As Ted Kennedy passed the torch to Barack Obama,
Specter should pass the torch to Joe Sestak and allow our next generation of
leadership to step forward.
In good conscious, we should reject the candidacy of Arlen Specter and say NO
to the back room deals that are trying to push him back into office. We should
not allow any political party to force a candidate on us, particularly one that
does not truly represent our goals. We must take control of our political
future. We must say NO to Arlen Specter!

What It Looks Like From Here Thom Cardwell

Fashion!
Fashion! Fashion! I'm chanting it a la Pet Shop Boys! (How
queer is that? Next, I might be conjuring up the spirit of one of my
other alter-egos, Edina Monsoon, of Absolutely Fabulous!)
Yes, these days it
seems like there's ever more fashion events in the city and region. I know that
we'll never be like New York City where the
fashion industry has anchored itself for decades and isn't moving anywhere else
no matter how hard cities like Los Angeles, Chicago or Miami try to
steal the crown and title of the fashion capital city of America!
For instance, Phashion Phest
has definitely become one of those Philadelphia
traditions, a rarity, really, in the city's fashion world.
Last year the annual
event marked its 15th anniversary, so, it's impressive that it reaches its 16th year despite the dismal retail
reports each month but, hey, unless,
you're planning to turn nudist or naturalist, you'll be buying clothes,
perhaps this year less of them than in previous years. That means that you need
to be even more attentive and selective, in building a good, classic, wardrobe,
of lasting quality garments, and "play" trendier with the accessories.
It's all returning at
6:15 showtime, September 23, to the
spectacular Millennium Ballroom at the
Loews Hotel Philadelphia, 1200 Market Street, with the this year's
theme of "fashion forecast."
Presented by Wachovia,
Center City District, BEAM Global Wines & Spirits, produced by creator Sharon Phillips Waxman of SPW
Productions, and hosted by the Loews Philadelphia Hotel, the retail fashion runway
brings together the area's upscale retailers, salons, and accessory boutiques
to promote the fashion and beauty industry in the Delaware Valley.
"Each year this show
gives the public a real sense of what's available in the retail stores, small
and large, independent and chain, in the Philadelphia region, " said Waxman,
"it's is a preview of that fall season and draws attention to what to shop for
and where to find it."
The always stylish event will feature upscale retailers from
Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley,
from Bloomingdale's, Douglas Cosmetics, Hats in the Belfry to The Shops at Liberty Place, Les
Richards Menswear and Zinman Furs, to name a handful of participating
retailers.
While the runway show is
always entertaining, the audience of local fashionista gets, frankly, more and more
interesting and, for me, eye-catching,
during the top-shelf open bar cocktail reception, and the mixing and mingling
of the classically dressed to the trendiest of outfits who are checking
out the hottest trends in hair and make-up even more the first model struts
down the runway.
We all know that when
things get tough, the (fashionably) tough go shopping--and--to fashion events,
so I'll see you there! Now, what did you say that you were wearing next
week?
Phashion Phest is open to the public. Tickets are $50 at the door and $25 for
students with valid ID. For more information, call 215.670.4323; or visit phashionphest.com
He's back! Club promoter extraordinaire Dan Contarino returns
to the city's nightlife scene with a vengeance with two dance parties! Your
Sundays, beginning on September 20 (that's this weekend), will truly never be
the same again!
"Ultra" will be held at "G" Lounge, 17th Street at Sansom, Philadelphia,
adjacent to fashionable Rittenhouse Square, in Rittenhouse Square, with Grand
Opening Celebration featuring a Complimentary "Grand Opening" admission, all night
long, an Open Bar, 8-10 pm, and
spinning for your dancing pleasure, New
York City Celebrity DJ/Producer ESCAPE.
"Unzipped" is being produced by Contarino in association with Jason E., Robbie Tronco, Phoenixx Alexander and
Justin Bruno at Denim Nightclub, 1712 Walnut Street, now owned and
operated by the partners of "G" Lounge, this late night party is being promoted
as a Sunday Night "Industry/In The Biz"
late night dance party targeting the salon, bar, restaurant industry types
mixing and mingling with the lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and queer
crowd. The party begins once the doors open at midnight and featured Sunday Night
Resident DJs will be DJ/Producers Robbie
Tronco and Jason E, Philadelphia and Atlantic City's most renowned and popular
DJs.

lot of action as this weekend's
be-and-be seen places to be, things to do, people to meet. I'll see you
there--so make sure to wear something fashionable!

speakOUT on the Qt! Buju Banton Concert at the Trocadero
copyright 2009 |
From: State
Senator Larry Farnese
HARRISBURG, Sept. 11 - I am
disappointed that a musician with a history of promoting homophobia and a
culture of violence will be performing in Philadelphia
this weekend. As Philadelphians, we
should let our voices be heard that advocating physical harm against fellow
citizens because of their sexual orientation is conduct that we will not
tolerate.
Last year, the state Supreme Court struck down - on
a technicality - legislation that sought to protect members of the LGBT
community from hate crimes. The fact that we continue to face messages of hate
only underscores that our work in Harrisburg
is far from over. I will continue to lead the fight to make sure that every
Pennsylvanian - regardless of their race, religion, ethnic origin, sexual
orientation or gender identity - can live without fear of harm or intimidation.
From: State Rep.
Babette Josephs
HARRISBURG, Sept. 11 - State Rep. Babette Josephs, D-Phila., today issued
the following statement regarding the planned concert of Buju Banton, an
anti-gay singer, at the Trocadero Theater:
"It is unfortunate that reggae singer Mr. Buju
Banton continues to sing songs that promote the brutal and violent murder of
gay and lesbian people, and that the Trocadero has given him a venue in which
to do so.
"The gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered
community deserve the same rights and freedoms as the straight community, and
that includes freedom from fear and violence.
"In recognizing this, I ask the owner of the
Trocadero to consider giving equal time to the LGBT community for an event that
promotes unity and tolerance."
From: Stephen A.
Glassman, Chairperson
The
Pennsylvania
Human Relations Commission
Vice
Chairperson of the Governor's Cabinet on Disability Rights Office
of Governor Edward G. Rendell, Pennsylvania
HARRISBURG, Sept. 11 - "Hate speech is deplorable whenever it
occurs, regardless of the intended victim or the irresponsible source of the
attacks. Those who encourage violence against minorities and women are complicit
in creating a climate of fear and intimidation in which hate crimes often
follow the sentiments promoted by insensitive song lyrics or prejudicial
words. LGBT people and their allies are currently fighting for equality and
legal protection from discrimination in the workplace, in housing, and in
public accommodations here in Pennsylvania.
Sexual orientation and gender identity or expression must be added to our state
civil rights statutes so that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals
enjoy the same protections under the law which are currently granted
to everyone else.
We are frequently perceived to be
easy targets by those who would abuse the public trust through their
demeaning and derogatory use of the English language. These reprehensible
comments are acts of cowardice and insecurity which dehumanize all
those who utter them or support them, and reveal both ignorance and immaturity
on the part of such misguided individuals. There is no place in our
society for acts of hatred and violence which are intended to inhibit the full
participation of women and minorities in our democracy.
It is particularly egregious when these
attacks are launched against those who are most vulnerable for whom
legal protections are still lacking at the state and federal levels. I
encourage the Pennsylvania
state legislature to once again pass an inclusive Hate Crimes bill to replace
the one which was overturned by the courts on a technicality in May of 2008.
The law worked well for the five years it was in effect, and we are long
overdue in repassing this important piece of legislation so that the Governor
can sign it into law where it will protect people against crimes motivated by
irrational hatred and bias."

Hey, forget about any and all bad news of the day! The
good news for area foodies and those who enjoy dining out is that restaurants
continue to announce their openings in Philadelphia
and the neighboring region.
Chef/owner Eric Paraskevas (formerly
of Slate and Lolita) is anticipated to open terra (with a lower "t"), 243 South Camac Street, Philadelphia,
located in the lower level of the Tavern on Camac,
an intimate, modern, 40-seat restaurant, with a fully renovated kitchen, and
featuring "New American" cuisine, opening sometime later this month.
"I am incredibly excited about terra. It is a fantastic new place with a look
and feel that fits me," said Paraskevas. "I feel very connected to the Earth, and terra is allowing me the
opportunity to create food celebrating that connection, as well as from my own
direction."
Highlights of Paraskevas menu will
include such appetizers as seared black cod with rosemary almond puree, olive
oil, and red shiso, hoe cake flat bread, served with spinach, roasted red
pepper, and fried egg; and entrees such as acorn squash hotpot, accompanied by
udon noodles, shaved duck breast, and bean sprouts and pan seared pork chop,
glazed salsify, pear salsa, topped with fresh horseradish jus.
Paraskevas loves his sweets, too, and will be featuring such delectable desserts
as mini blue moon orange ice cream floats as well as chocolate tres leches
paired with dulce de leche, caramelized bananas, and salty pecans.
terra will also have a cozy fully stocked bar, with craft beers
and fine wines.
The dinner-only restaurant will be open daily from 5 to 10
pm, Sunday through Thursday and 5 to 11 pm, on Friday and Saturday.

Sampan, 122 South 13th Street, Philadelphia, a
modern Asian restaurant, is slated to open in November by chef/owner Michael Schulson, television host
of "Ultimate Cake Off," a new
series pitting competitive bakers against each other in a variety of
challenging scenarios, airing nationally on TLC, and also a star on the Style Network's "Panty Raid" and formerly of Philadelphia's Pod and Manhattan's
Buddakan.
Despite his celebrity status and national acclaim, Schulson
is returning to the foodies of Philadelphia.
Schulson, who was chef/owner of Izakaya,
the award-winning and critically acclaimed modern Japanese pub, his first
restaurant in Atlantic City's
Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa that
he opened in 2008 is different in concept, approach and size to Sampan.
"Sampan is my chance to prepare
serious food from across Asia while
interacting with my guests and sharing my love of this cuisine with them," he
explained.
The 80-seat restaurant was designed by Philadelphia's Sparks Design who gave Sampan a distinctive look with distressed
metals, reclaimed timber and a rustic, natural aesthetic anchored by a
custom-crafted, color washed painting that lends a warm ambiance to the space.
Sampan will feature a menu of small
plates for sampling and sharing, featuring such dishes as Schulson's signature
edamame dumplings, with black truffles, onion sprouts and sake; tuna tataki
summer roll with ponzu gelee, somen noodles and chiles; skate wing sandwich
with oshinko, arugula and tartar sauce; steak and eggs, braised short rib with
egg and Asian pear; veal tonkatsu burger with panko, kimchee and katsu sauce;
young fried rice with shrimp, golden chives and congee; and crispy frog legs
with Chinese celery and blue cheese. Prices will range from $7 to $29.
Schulson's passion for food and cooking began during childhood on Long Island,
where he first learned to cook alongside his mother and grandmother. He
graduated from the Culinary Institute of
America, where he interned with culinary legend David Burke at New York's
Park Avenue Café. His impressive career includes having worked at such
acclaimed restaurants as New York's Peacock
Alley in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel
and Philadelphia's
Le Bec Fin, Susanna Foo and Buddakan.

What They Said:
copyrighted 2009 |
In an age when discussions about the decline of the
printed word in newspapers and magazines being replaced by the Internet usually
just gets a big yawn from most people, it is definitely something to celebrate
that Paper
marked its 25th anniversary year this month (September 2009). Frankly, I was
astounded to learn that, wondering where did all those years go, just when I
was beginning to fear that fashion magazines were steadily becoming a thing of
the past. Being a fashionista my entire life, I crave for more glossy magazines
with wonderful fashion photography spreads, the more the better, but we've lost
a handful of them already--Cargo, Men's Vogue, DMR, WWD Scoop--and some others,
especially in the men's fashion field, seem like they're about to be placed on
the endangered species list. Everyone from Tommy Hilfiger to Ben & Jerry's
to MAC congratulated the folks at PAPER. Why their longevity? The editors
explain: "In 1984, when we launched
PAPER as a black-and-white fold-out poster, fashion was an esoteric pastime
appreciated primarily by the wealthy and the elite. Since then, the
democratization of fashion has spread worldwide, and we count ourselves among
those who have consistently celebrated the work of young talents."
______________________________
While the founders, editors and staffers at PAPER
ware waxing philosophic about "the democratization of fashion" within the pages
of their special 25th anniversary, queer designer extraordinaire, Christian Lacroix
told writer Amy Larocca (New York, August 24, 2009) that he, as a Frenchman,
wanted to reclaim "haute couture," as something rightly part of the national
identity of France, "like croissants and small dogs and moss-green chairs in
the parks." These days, at least in the lexicon of fashion, "couture" is
probably the most overused and misused word. It sounds like a fancier word than
it really is. But "haute couture" means clothing made entirely by hand.
Back to Lacroix's statement to the media in anticipation of New York City's Fashion Week, "Without couture, no life is possible.
Nothing. I remember being a teenager in '69 and our president, Mr.Pompidon,
said in a press conference, 'The France of Camembert is over!' He
was wrong. Of course we are good for some computers and everything, but forever
cheese and couture should be sanctified in this country. In Italy they have
a very wonderful way of doing fashion, but it is deluxe ready-to-wear. It is
not handmade; it is not coquette. Everything about couture, it belongs to Paris."

Margaret
Cho,
comedienne and activist and longtime friend to queers, has always been on the
cutting edge. Fearless and unapologetic during her entire career (I've
always adored her for those qualities and her many talents), she isn't afraid
to go where most other celebrities won't wander. So, it's not surprising that
dominatrix (didn't she always aspirer to be one?) has distinguished herself as
being the first mainstream celebrity-and woman--to grace the cover a gay adult
magazine, Unzipped (August, 2009). Photographed by Trevor
O'Shana in a bondage scenario, Cho is photographed with exclusive Raging
Stallion Studios model Ricky Sinz, who is depicted on his knees, arms
spread, collar-coaked, bridled with a bit in his mouth, black leather, laced up
the front girdle, and enough tattoos to keep you reading his muscular body for
at least a few hours! Of course, Cho, in "hot" red pulls the
reins--hard--behind Sinz. Why Cho? "[She]
transcends sexual stereotypes. The energy and sex appeal that Margaret and
Ricky bring to the feature article is amazing. The photos are electric and
we're thrilled to have two iconic sexual adventurers on the cover," said
Unzipped's publisher Dustin Tyner (XBIZ Premiere, August 2009).
