250 Feet James Duggan

Two-hundred-fifty feet, that is the distance a Philadelphia judge
ordered protesters to stay away from a local business when a dispute erupted
between a business tenet and the property owner. Blaze Waters, of House
of Blaze, a local queer bar in Northeast Philadelphia,
was locked out of the second floor of Albert's Cafe and Sports Bar over a
rental dispute with building owner Albert Buoncristiano.
It has since been announced that Buoncristiano plans
to open a club of his own in the disputed space catering to a heterosexual
clientele.
The day before the third protest on July 31, Waters
was informed by Buoncristiano's attorney that he filed an emergency injunction
to halt any further demonstrations.
The judge granted a temporary restraining order,
which prohibited protesters from being within 250 feet of the building. They
were also restricted to having no more than 35 protesters.
Buoncristiano is now trying to sue Waters and his
manager for over $5,000, claiming that the protest have caused him to lose
business.
Two-hundred-fifty feet is a long distance--83.3
yards. A few years ago, another judge issued a temporary restraining
order against protesters who wanted to demonstrate a foie gras festival.
In that case, the judge ordered the protesters to stay 50 yards away from the
festival.
I have been saying for years now that the
anti-queer protesters who show up at our festivals should be keep a respectful
distance away from the activities. There presence is both a disruption to
the festival and a hindrance to the vendors who must put up with the crowds
that these protestors draw and the large number of police used to "protect" the
protesters.
The vendors are directly harmed when people can not
reach their booths or attendees choose not to visit them because they don't
want to come close to the demonstration.
The rights of the anti-queer protesters are
constantly trumpeted over the rights of the vendors to sell their
merchandise. Vendors who have paid a fee for their booths are being
pushed aside by the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) so they can facilitate
a protest area for the demonstrators.
Let me be very clear. I am not opposed to any
individual walking through our festivals handing out whatever materials for
whatever cause. But I am strongly opposed to the PPD setting up protest
zones within feet of festival vendors to the detriment of their
businesses. I am further opposed to allowing these protesters the use of
amplification devices within a permitted festival area, and I'm opposed to the
PPD marching these protesters through the festival while at the same time
physically pushing festival attendees out of the way.
Organizers of our festivals need to go on the
offensive against this incursion of protestors.
All I'm asking for is that the PPD be restricted
from setting up protest zones within 50 feet of vendors . . . that's only 16.6
yards. Is that too much to ask?
I'm sure there is an attorney or two who would be
willing to seek a temporary restraining order on behalf of the festival and its
vendors to make this happen.
What are we waiting for?

What It Looks Like From Here Thom Cardwell
copyright 2010 |
There's been a long tradition of men dressing as
women. In the theater, it dates back at least to recorded time during
Elizabethan England during Shakespeare's time when only men were able to
perform on stage (women were early on second-class citizens). The tradition
began and even the stage direction read: d.r.a.g that was shorthand for "dress
as girl," hence the modern day word from the 15th century, "drag."
The fascination, the curiosity, the joy, the
gender-bending, (even the sexual titillation for some) and the sheer
entertainment has lasted for centuries. There have been highpoints in this
genuine and legitimate form of entertainment, with the roaring 1920s and the
decadent 1930s (particularly in Germany
and England)
with female impersonation.
Modern day Hollywood depictions of this form of
entertainment appear in "Cabaret" and "Victor, Victoria" with even the
introduction of the "drag king" as women dress as men, in that film, with a
major break in her character departure, with the very-talented and proper Julie Andrews.
Though film historians would point out that the
establishment of the drag king was early on in Hollywood
films that should be attributed to Marlene
Dietrich and, to a lesser extent, to Greta
Garbo.
All of what I'm writing here is the perfect segue
to a definitely not-to-be-missed summer event this month.
"Divas In a
Man's World" Outdoor Concert, directed by Steven Andrade that will feature the "World Famous Celebrity Impersonators" and produced by Philadelphia
Events Impresario Dan Contarino in the cooperation with The Piazza at Schmidts will launch on August 27.
Contarino, one of the leading events promoters and
producers in the Northeast corridor, enjoys bringing "Philadelphia firsts" offering unique
entertainment experiences for the region's audiences."
He pointed out that the lineup of cast members for "Divas
In a Man's World" has been presented "only in the Showrooms at Casino Resorts
around the globe."
Audience will enjoy the evening's show host,
according to Contarino, "the legendary Gary
Dee as JOAN RIVERS."
Dee aka Ms.RIVERS will be
joined by the performers slated to attend. They include many of your favorite
divas, all on the Piazza's Main Outdoor Stage, all in one big glamour and
superstar-studded show: BETTE MIDLER,
ELTON JOHN, CHER, CELINE DION, PRINCE, PATTI LABELLE, ARETHA
FRANKLIN, TINA TURNER, and
"queen of divas" MISS DIANA ROSS!
In addition, Philadelphia-based Billboard Recording
Artist BARBARA SHEREE will serve as
the dynamic opening act with a live performance. Contarino said that she
"feature the premiere of her newest hit."
SHEREE was Patti Labelle'sLEAD WINNER of her "Gospel Team" from the reality show "CLASH OF THE CHOIRS". From there, her career has been skyrocketing
as a single singing sensation.
There are two ways for the public to purchase
tickets: A VIP Pre-Party is open to the public
featuring $40.00 priced VIP
sponsored open bar reception Meet & Greet from 7 pm-9 pm which will be
co-hosted by City of Hope to raise
funds for "Walk for Hope".
General Live
Concert Show
for $20 will open to the public at 8:30 pm for the 9 pm show time live
performance located at the Piazza's Main Outdoor Stage.
Just in case, Contarino has set the rain date for
this event on August 28, with all times for VIP
and main performance to remain exactly the same.

Thom's Fashion World Thom Cardwell
copyright 2010 |
Lovers
of fashion from around the world will begin visiting Antwerp, Belgium,
more frequently now that MoMu, a new
museum devoted entirely to fashion will soon be opening.
To
celebrate the occasion, the premiere exhibition, "Stephen Jones & the Accent of Fashion," is a complete
retrospective of the 30th anniversary of Stephen Jones Millinery,
opening on September 8 and installed there for 6 months.
The
queer designer is legendary for his early hats made for queer designer John Galliano. Many of those will be on
display alongside the 120 pieces that comprise the show from local private
collectors of Jones' hats, Geert Bruloot
and Eddy Michiels.
Hats
are more popular than ever to the delight of Jones who has spent his entire
career making them despite up and down trends
The
Victoria and Albert Museum in London traveled their exhibition on the history of hats to
Brisbane, Australia,
to record-breaking crowds of a quarter million visitors this spring.
"The
curators are creating the exhibition around me and it's fascinating to see
someone else's point of view," Jones told editors at WWD Accessories (Fall, 2010), "It is going to be a real adventure. It's
strange to have your life on view."
Do
you smell good? How about others around you? Or are you looking for a new
scent, it's a powerful allurement to others from sex, romance to social
interaction.
Well,
the industry knows that and continues to flourish.
Right
now it seems like everybody who's anybody has a fragrance these days, from
designers to actors to musicians to superstars to just plain celebrities.
For
their 20th anniversary in the fashion industry, queer designers,
business partners and domestic partners Stefano
Gabbanna and Domenico Dolce have
launched Dolce & Gabanna The One
Gentlemen.
The
famously successful Italian duo said that their campaign for their newest
fragrance was inspired by their country's classic films and iconic actors like Marcello Mastroianni (best known for
his roles in Frederico Fellini's "La
Dolce Vita" and "8 ½") and it's for "gentleman [who] take care of himself and
the people around him."
Other
darlings of the fashion world who have new fragrances include designers Vera Wang of women's scents, Vera Wang
and Vera Wang Princess, Donna Karan's
PureDKNY, Calvin Klein's Beauty, Oscar de la Renta's Oscar, Gucci's Gucci Sport Pour Homme, and Henri Bendel's Scent Collection.
Replay
Refresh, a women's fragrance, has allied itself with a charity, the Children's
Safe Drinking Program, a worldwide nonprofit organization that will receive a
percentage of the proceeds of the sale of each product. The Italian denim brand
company has launched both a women's and men's scent as part of this campaign.
Entertainment
superstars are out in full force about fragrances. Antonio Banderas' The Secret
(the seventh fragrance bearing his name) launched this month. "Desparate Housewives" Eva Longoria, clearly
a fashionista, both on and off the screen, has presented "Eva," a women's
fragrance for the consumer market. Mary J. Blige has her signature women's
fragrance, "My Life," named after her landmark recording in 1994. "I wanted my
fragrance to be something special for my female fans," Blige told WWD (April
30, 2010).
Even
Bruce Willis will soon introduce his first signature men's fragrance that will
be, according to reports in WWD (April 16, 2010), an "extremely masculine"
product.
Next Month, exclusive to Qt: The Denim Revolution; Plaids Return; Rise of
the Camel.

What They Said and Did!

| Jazz great Abbey Lincoln died at the age of 80 last week.
Singer, songwriter, stylist, painter, activist, actress, mentor to many in the
musical community, particularly in jazz vocals and songwriting, Lincoln was a
force to be reckoned with whether it was in the entertainment industry or in
the height of the historic Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Her obituary
(The New York Times, August 15, 2010) eloquently written by Nate Chinen was
comprehensive, expansive, extensive, praiseworthy and relatively long. It
appropriately reflects the breath and depth of Lincoln's career and her life as an
extraordinary human being. Her ability to interpret a song and, literally,
"make it her own," was praised by critics and appreciated by audience for
decades. "Her singing style was unique, a combined result of bold projection
and expressive restraint. Because of her ability to inhabit the emotional
dimensions of a song, she was often likened to Billie Holiday, her chief
influence. But Ms. Lincoln had a deeper register and a darker tone, and her way
with phrasing was more declarative," wrote Chinen. She performed in concert and
on recordings ("That Him," "Retribution," "The World is Falling Down," "Abbey
Sings Abbey") with the who's who of jazz, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Max
Roach, to name a few. She celebrated her African-American heritage, visited
Africa where she was honored with awards from the nations of Zaire and Guinea. Of her ability for
storytelling and songwriting, she said: "I don't know why anybody would give that up. I wouldn't. Makes
my life worthwhile." __________________________________________ Levi Johnston seems to have become unstoppable,
unpredictable, and maybe even a bit outrageous. He also now gets credit for
knowing how to milk what at one time would have been truly his 15-minutes of
fame. But the boy has learned, with the help of many others, I'm sure, how to
turn himself into a brand for both fame and even more for fortune. He surprised
most of the public when he appeared in a nude modeling spread for Playgirl.com,
now he may have his own Reality TV show, Loving Levi: The Road to the Mayor
(there's a lot of Interest in Tinseltown) and recently announced that he's
putting in a bid to run for public office as a mayoral candidate for Wasilla,
Alaska, even though the seat isn't up until 2012. There's even some talk of Johnston running for
governor one day if he does well in fulfilling his duties as mayor or a City
Council seat before that. (Wonder if the gay porn title, starring a Johnston look-a-like,
called Levi's Johnson, will lose him any votes?) "It's hard to figure me out," he boasts, "You've got to follow me
around. I'm very different. I lead a crazy life. But it will basically be both
worlds, my life in Hollywood
and back home, the real country boy that I am. This show will send a message to
America
about who I really am and what I want to do with my life." Remember he's a
self-proclaimed "half redneck"! The other half? He says "pure Hollywood." __________________________________________ James
Frain of
True Blood plays Franklin, the mad suitor of Tara, he brings to the role,
according to Emma Rosenblum (New York, August 2, 2010), a different sort of
vampire (and we're not just talking about his natural British accent) but "a
sadistic possessiveness with hilariously endearing insecurity." Frain as Franklin is also "a lot
less virtuous than Bill and a little more dangerous than Eric."
Are Franklin and Tara made for each other? "He's just trying to get her to wake
up and realize this is the relationship she'd been dreaming of. I don't really
think of him as a vampire, but more as an abusive boyfriend who happened to get
bit," said Frain. Why are your fangs bigger than everyone else's in the cast? "They're crazy long, and I don't know why.
It's probably supposed to say something about the character," he replied;
then howled with laughter.
