Overheard

Homophobic and disparaging remarks made on Wednesday morning during the airing of the Chio in the Morning Show (96.5 fm).

The little boys on the show ran a segment called "Gay Man Walking" where they go into a gay bar and ask a series of gay men "manly" questions to show how ignorant they are and have callers guess whether the queer will get it right or wrong.

While the boys didn't seem intent on being vicious, they were completely ignorant to the fact they were promoting homophobia. This type of ignorance is never acceptable. We, as a community, need to take a firm stand against such "segments" ever disparaging the queer community again.

QUEERtimes encourages all our readers and their friends and family to take action. Let your voice be heard!

Fort Lauderdale's Homophobic Mayor

South Florida Sun-Sentinelreports that Fort Lauderdale's queer residents and city activists have asked that Mayor Jim Naugle, resign Tuesday, in response to the mayor's recent comments.

According to the news reportage, Naugle stated that he doesn't use the term "gay" because "they're unhappy" (a similar argument used by the fundamentalist right), and that he was opposed to new self-cleaning public toilets on the beach because they will become cruising places for "homosexual activity."

Nicki Grossman, president of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Visitor and Convention Bureau, told the Sun-Sentinel that queer tourists spent an estimated $1 billion in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area last year.  That's a lot of queer pink dollars and that represents a lot of economic muscle.

QUEERtimes encourages our community to speak out in support of our queer brothers and sisters in gay-friendly Fort Lauderdale and support their call for the immediate resignation of Mayor Naugle.

Let your voice be heard and vote in the
Sun-Sentinel poll located on their home page in the lower right corner

Dorian Gray

The 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival  has already reached its midway point with an increase of 15% in ticket sales and many advance sell-outs from pop movie hits like New Line Cinema's "Hairspray" to the gay Indie title, "The Picture of Dorian Gray."

Craig LucasThe second weekend is highlighted by the Artistic Achievement Award to distinguished out screenwriter Craig Lucasof the landmark AIDS film, "Longtime Companion" in addition to "Prelude to a Kiss" and the more recent masterpiece, "Drying Gaul" on July 21 at the Arts Bank.

There's still several centerpiece screenings to catch at PIGLFF 2007. "The Bubble" tells the story of the gay romance between an Israeli and a Palestinian in Tel Aviv and screens on July 20 and 22 at the Prince. "The Witnesses" is a French tale of gay life of experience and adventure on July 21 at the Prince.

Okay, so what to see?

Nina's HD

Let's face it, we all have our favorites and our habits of viewing films. Well, it's about the time to break with your own traditions and see films that you won't normally. Guys, try viewing a lesbian feature for a change. "Nina's Heavenly Delights," distributed by here!, is one of the best films in the festival. It's a spicy romantic comedy with Bollywood flair and screens on July 21 at the Wilma and July 22 at the Prince. In my opinion, it's a not-to-be-missed film for everyone.

Farley GrangerHow about a night of shorts made by local gay filmmakers? This year's programmers have collected an interesting night, "Out in Philly," a shorts program with everything from "Inner Wang" directed by Michele Pollino to "Sarah Vaughn" directed by Kevin A. Brown on July 22 at the Arts Bank. It's a rare opportunity to see what's currently happening within the region's queer shorts-making community.
