queer film reel

Last night marked the open of the 13th Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, perhaps the crown jewel of all the queer events in the region, the Sundance for the queer community.  In fact Philadelphia's queer film festival has grown to be the largest of its kind on the East Coast (do you hear that NYC) and the third largest in the United States with 12 full days of queer movies and outstanding events and parties.

Often we hear about events that are "must sees", but the Philly queer film festival is the real thing.  Movies by, for and about queers!  Features, documentaries and shorts from all over the world.  What an amazing opportunity to experience films that you would otherwise never be exposed to and to meet queer actors, directors, writers and producers from around the world.  What could be better for the queer movie lover?

QUEERtimes recommends that you put down the books, turn off the TVs, and push away from the computers and take this opportunity to see a movie, or two, or three, and enjoy the experience of queer voices from all over the world.

 An except from www.phillyfests.com:

The Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival is sexy, enticing, surprising and fun - showcasing nearly 200 films from around the globe, featuring world premieres, sneak previews, classic revivals and more, all in the comfort of cushy seats and air-conditioned theaters down Broad Street and throughout the Gayborhood.

From Nigeria to Iceland, South Korea to Romania, digital video to 35mm film, this year's program crosses genders as well as genres, introducing audiences to new worlds and new people, with compelling comedies, dramas, thrillers and docs, bursting with LGBT diversity both on screen and behind the scenes!

It's a spectacular year for guests and awards, with additional appearances by drag superstar RuPaul, "Rent" icon Anthony Rapp, cast members of Another Gay Movie, Michael Carbonaro, Jonah Blechman, Mitch Morris and more to be announced!

With a reputation, the parties and receptions are dazzling and fabulous, with a different event every night of the week! From dance parties to bowling and billiards, leather bars to ice cream socials, kinky Quizzo to lavish riverfront views - audiences will enjoy outdoor screenings on South Street and at Penn's Landing, with stops in between at a dynamite array of queer-friendly bars, restaurants, hotels and clubs.

Charlie David

Well, the smashing opening night is over. Onwards and upwards in your navigation of this year's unusually multi-cultural and diverse film festival.  If you didn't make the be-and-be-seen opening night film and Dante's Cover's hottie of PIGLFF 2007, Charlie David, then you can catch him at the 2:45 PM screening of "A Four Letter Word" on July 14 where he'll also be presented with the Rising Star Award.

Just to make sure that you can't get enough of him, the busy, hard-working, actor also appears in the closing night film, "Kiss the Bride," on July 24. Our young turk of an actor (he's a Canadian boy) may have been the first actor to ever achieve being in both the opening and closing night films in any of our or anyone else's festivals.

Okay, so what to see?

Out At The Wedding

Let's face it, we all have our favorites and our habits of viewing films. Well, it's about time to break with your own traditions and see films that you won't normally see. Guys, try viewing a lesbian feature for a change. "Out of the Wedding" is a wacky lesbian/gay comedy on July 13 and 15. You can even win a cool prize from Avis!  I'm not telling what it is.

Another Gay Sequel

Did you ever attend a staged reading of a film yet-to-shot? "Mischievous" conjurer of word play and image, writer/director Todd Stephens assembles a wonderful cast of actors to present the first public sharing of "Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild" on July 14.

Blueprint

How about an African-American film?  There's several this year including a gay college romance in "Blueprint" on July 13 and 14, with an after-party, on Friday, sponsored by Sundance Channel, at Crescent City, come by and meet and greet the director, producer and actors, and from South Africa, "Black Beulahs" dealing with universal issues as image, identity and integration on July 15.

Eternal Summer

There are several Asian-American films worth seeing, a male feature, "Eternal Summer" on July  13 and  16, and a female feature, "
