Civil Marriages James Duggan

According to a report on LAist.com, a bill was introduced in the California Senate that
would further codify the separation of church and state. Bill SB906,
the Civil Marriage Religious Freedom Act, "will affirm that no clergy member
will be forced under law to perform any civil marriage that is against his or
her belief system."
The bill's primary sponsor, State Senator Mark Leno
(D-3) states: "Some opponents of marriage for
same-sex couples have argued that churches and members of clergy would be
required to solemnize marriages that conflict with their religious
beliefs. While we know religious freedom is protected under our
Constitution, this legislation eliminates any confusion or doubt under state
law, reaffirming that no member of clergy or church will be penalized for
refusing to solemnize marriages that violate their religious tenets,"
Proponents of same-sex marriage hope that passage
of the bill would help make the prospect of same-sex marriage less
objectionable to opponents.
If passed, the bill
would change the language of California
law to call all marriages recognized by the state "civil marriages."
But, of course, the far right is calling this another avenue to
same-sex marriage.
According to reports in the Baptist Press,
the anti-queerrights group, California
Family Policy Council (CFPC) has expressed concerns over the bill. Everett
Rice, their legislative coordinator, stated their concern "is over the specific
changing of the California
statute to create a new class of civil marriage."
"We are
concerned that that's going to become another avenue of actually changing the
definition of marriage itself. That's been pretty much the focus of Senator
Leno's and those who support homosexual marriage. Our concern is that the bill
incrementally begins the process of doing that. What we've seen in the past is
that measures like these incrementally try to change whole institutions," said Rice.
Similar language was used in the New Hampshire same-sex
marriage legislation which ultimately led to its passage.
This bill helps to alleviate the
concern of many on the right where there is an unfounded fear that religious
leaders would be forced to perform same-sex marriages against there will.
To be sure, the anti-queer far-right
will never be happy with anything we do so there is no use trying to please
them. Anything the smells of advancement in our civil rights; they will
oppose with all their will.
So, too, must we! We must be
willing with all our will to help advance our own civil rights. In this
instance, it is to lobby our States to pass similar legislation thereby getting
them out of the religious marriage business.
SB906 is a great model for other
states. It just seems to make perfect sense to get the state out of the
religious marriage business and codified into the civil marriage business. This
would demonstratively be a genuine separation of Church and State, something
long overdue.
The State should only be in the civil
marriage business where they issue a license and perform the union. If a
couple then wishes to have a solemn religious marriage, then that couple can
follow the instructions and creeds of the organization they wish to belong.
It is the same way Italy
has been doing it for hundreds of years.
I've written of my support for such
legislation in the past and it's great to see the idea moving forward.
Now is the time to raise the issue with
our elected officials and candidates, especially those who are our allies and
friends. Would they support similar legislation? If not, why?
Do you?

What It Looks Like From Here Thom Cardwell

So, what's the story on "queer sensibility"? Is there such a thing or not? How is that different from a work of art
having "homoerotic" qualities? Do all
queer artists have it by the very nature of their sexual orientation? Can their art be separate from their basic
nature or personality? Can artists
express "queer sensibility" in some works and not others, intentionally or
unintentionally? Can it be controlled,
suppressed, manipulated?
And what about you-the viewer? Do you bring a "queer sensibility" like so
much psychological baggage to works of art?
Can others who aren't queer see the same things that you see when it
comes to sexual orientation and expression of "queer sensibility"? Does it matter? Does it limit who the art can
ultimately speak to? Is there something universal, global, all-telling about
"queer sensibility"?
Does it then marginalize or classify the artist,
the works of art and the viewer, too? So what does this mean in the larger or
the smaller context of artistic expression and enjoyment?
Finally, can a queer artist not have "queer
sensibility" like some queers have bad gaydar?
Maybe some or all or none of these questions will
be settled but we're going to try to explore, express, explain and exploit the
concept of "queer sensibility" this summer when AxD Gallery, 265 South 10th
Street, Philadelphia, adjacent to the city's Gayborhood, in conjunction with QUEERtimes,
fueled by BUCKmonkey, and Philadelphia QFest 2010 (July 9-18),
produced by the Philadelphia Cinema
Alliance and TLA Entertainment Group,
present 10 artists in a juried group show this summer (July 9-August 7) on the exhibition theme of "Queer Sensibility."
Currently, the curators of AxD Gallery are seeking LGBTQ-identified artists from
across the nation to submit examples of their work in all categories, with no entry fees, and the possibility of
winning an award from the distinguished panel of jurors, no later than March 15, by sending a half dozen jpegs
to queer@a-x-d.com.
"The purpose of this first stage is for AxD Gallery
to select artists-not select specific works of art for the show," explained year-round
gallery curator Ryan
McMenamin, "After review of Stage 1 submissions, AxD
gallery will invite ten artists to submit portfolios of their work (either digitally
or in person) in order to select specific works for inclusion in the Queer
Sensibility exhibition in July. All work selected must be available for sale at
the show."
McMenamin said that "while AxD Gallery tends to be partial
toemphasizing non-representational and
abstract contemporary visual arts, we do like to mix it up in our exhibitions
with sculpture, erotica and shear whimsy from time to time-just to keep it fun!"
The exhibition will be the first-of-its-kind at AxD Gallery with the
collaborative efforts of all the participating organizations and sponsors.

On the heels of Valentine's
Day, chef/owner Jose Garces will
open Garces
Trading Company, 1111 Locust Street, Philadelphia,
his latest venture and sixth location in Philadelphia,
as a gourmet market and café, adjacent to the city's Gayborhood, on February
16.
The
multi-purpose space will feature a host of
house-made and imported foods under the Garces Trading Company label, as
well as Chef Garces' award-winning cuisine, available for eat-in or take-out, in addition to a flower shop, an on-site
bakery, private label olive oils and vinegars, Chef Garces' signature coffee
and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board's first wine boutique, distinguishing it as the city's only all-in-one culinary destination.
"I
want Garces Trading Company to be a first for Philadelphia: perfect for a quick
bite or a casual meal at any time of day, from breakfast until night," said
Garces who was recently named one of Food
Network's Iron Chefs and owns Amada, Tinto, Distrito, Chifa and Village Whiskey restaurants.
Highlights of Garces'
lunch and dinner menu will include European fare such as a
variety of pastas such as Pappardelle with
lamb ragu, sun choke puree and piavecchio and Tuscan Fusilli alla Carbonara with guanciale, eggs, black pepper
and pecorino; thin crust and deep dish pizzas (Chef Garces hails from Chicago); and daily changing
plats du jour such as Coq au Vin,
with pearl onions, mushrooms and potatoes on Mondays and Bouillabaisse with gambas, halibut,
mussels, cockles and saffron ruille on Thursdays.
Working with his longtime collaborator, Jun Aizaki, of New
York-based Crème Design Collective,
Garces has envisioned the restaurant and
market to seat 75 diners at high-top, butcher block tables, while guests
browse the wares surrounding the central dining area.
A florist stall, wine shop, coffee counter, bakery and cheese and
charcuterie seller will ring the u-shaped space much like an outdoor market in Europe, framing the tables with
delectable displays of their wares that include hanging cured meats and
cheeses, sprays of blossoms and cases of wine.
Hours will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 10
p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. The full service
cafe will be open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The Wine Shop will be
open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 12 noon to
5 p.m. Sunday.

specially priced selection of lunch items will include the Union Trust
signature Kobe
burger, crispy calamari with sweet and spicy citrus dressing and hot Italian
ham and cheese sandwich.
The menu is available to diners, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday
through Friday.

It's definitely well worth the trip, even in the cold weather, Rat's
Restaurant at Grounds For Sculpture, 16 Fairgrounds Road,
in Hamilton, New Jersey, for Spanish Wine Dinner, created by Executive Chef Kevin Sbraga, 6 p.m., February 25, $85 per person plus tax and
gratuity.
Sbraga's inspired menu will
begin with a selection of Spanish-inspired tapas: Pan con Tomate
(toasted bread with tomatoes, garlic and Manchego cheese); Jamon con Melon
(Spanish ham and melon); Tortillas with egg, potato and onion pinxto; and
Tigres (mussels in a spicy tomato sauce), and all paired with Cava.
Diners will be offered an
impressive selection of entrees including a Pulpo en Escabeche (grilled octopus,
capers, lemon, potatoes, and smoked paprika) paired with a 2007 Morgadio Rias
Baixas from the Northwest corner of the Spain. Chef Sbraga will also serve
a Conejo con Castanas (braised rabbit with chestnuts, figs, fennel and sherry)
and a Chuleto de Cerdo (pork chop with green onions, romseco, chorizo, and
morel mushrooms), and paired, respectively, with a 2007 Muret Granacha and
Condado de Haza.
For a sweet finale,
Sbarga's menu will offer diners Cana de Cabra featuring apples in a spiced
honey drizzle paired with a 2004 Pedro Ximinez 2004 vintage.
Outside the restaurant, Grounds
For Sculpture is a whimsical thirty-five
acre sculpture garden and arboretum on the former site of the New Jersey
State Fairgrounds. Founded by Seward
Johnson in 1992 to promote an understanding of and appreciation for
contemporary sculpture, the park features more than 250 contemporary
sculptures, and two 10,000 square foot museum galleries with rotating exhibits.
Currently, there is a special retrospective of the Philadelphia-born
sculptor, "Albert Paley: Dialogue with
Steel," through April 18.
