Queer Agenda Goes Mainstream

While President Obama . . . I just love saying that . . . was still giving his inaugural speech, his staff was busy at the White House updating the official presidential website. Within minutes of the update I received notice that the queer agenda had been posted on WhiteHouse.gov.
With great anticipation I could hardly wait to see the new site for myself. There it was as clear as a sunny day, we had achieved something that I thought might never happen in my lifetime . . . right there on an official government web site . . . the White House no less . . . the queer agenda had gone mainstream . . . our fight for equality had taken on a new dimension. Equality has become an official agenda of the Executive Branch of government. A greater ally we have never had . . . the President of the United States and the full power of his office.
Seeing President Obama's commitment to us on the White House website was more moving to me then either his election or his inauguration. There the President of the United States took his campaign promises another step forward for the entire world to see . . . queers not only deserve equality but he will use his office to fight with us; he took his promises and made them into an official commitment.
We need to take just a moment and embrace the enormity of this reality . . . we are witnesses to a paradigm shift in our fight for equality. Damn our opponents who for decades have claimed that the "gay agenda" would destroy America and full speed ahead. Ours will be an America where all peoples are treated equally regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
With this President Obama has put forth an aggressive queer rights agenda that needs more then our applause and gratitude . . . we and our hetero allies now need to continue the fight armed with a new spirit righteousness and a commitment for the highest office in the land.
The promise land is in sight, may I live to see it or may I die fighting for it.
Text of the Queer Agenda as seen on the Official White House Web Site
"While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect."
Barack Obama, June 1, 2007
Expand Hate Crimes Statutes: In 2004, crimes against LGBT Americans constituted the third-highest category of hate crime reported and made up more than 15 percent of such crimes. President Obama cosponsored legislation that would expand federal jurisdiction to include violent hate crimes perpetrated because of race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. As a state senator, President Obama passed tough legislation that made hate crimes and conspiracy to commit them against the law.
Fight Workplace Discrimination: President Obama supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and believes that our anti-discrimination employment laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity. While an increasing number of employers have extended benefits to their employees' domestic partners, discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace occurs with no federal legal remedy. The President also sponsored legislation in the Illinois State Senate that would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
Support Full Civil Unions and Federal Rights for LGBT Couples: President Obama supports full civil unions that give same-sex couples legal rights and privileges equal to those of married couples. Obama also believes we need to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal rights and benefits currently provided on the basis of marital status are extended to same-sex couples in civil unions and other legally-recognized unions. These rights and benefits include the right to assist a loved one in times of emergency, the right to equal health insurance and other employment benefits, and property rights.
Oppose a Constitutional Ban on Same-Sex Marriage: President Obama voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2006 which would have defined marriage as between a man and a woman and prevented judicial extension of marriage-like rights to same-sex or other unmarried couples.
Repeal Don't Ask-Don't Tell: President Obama agrees with former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff John Shalikashvili and other military experts that we need to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. The key test for military service should be patriotism, a sense of duty, and a willingness to serve. Discrimination should be prohibited. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars replacing troops kicked out of the military because of their sexual orientation. Additionally, more than 300 language experts have been fired under this policy, including more than 50 who are fluent in Arabic. The President will work with military leaders to repeal the current policy and ensure it helps accomplish our national defense goals.
Expand Adoption Rights: President Obama believes that we must ensure adoption rights for all couples and individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. He thinks that a child will benefit from a healthy and loving home, whether the parents are gay or not.
Promote AIDS Prevention: In the first year of his presidency, President Obama will develop and begin to implement a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy that includes all federal agencies. The strategy will be designed to reduce HIV infections, increase access to care and reduce HIV-related health disparities. The President will support common sense approaches including age-appropriate sex education that includes information about contraception, combating infection within our prison population through education and contraception, and distributing contraceptives through our public health system. The President also supports lifting the federal ban on needle exchange, which could dramatically reduce rates of infection among drug users. President Obama has also been willing to confront the stigma -- too often tied to homophobia -- that continues to surround HIV/AIDS.
Empower Women to Prevent HIV/AIDS: In the United States, the percentage of women diagnosed with AIDS has quadrupled over the last 20 years. Today, women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. President Obama introduced the Microbicide Development Act, which will accelerate the development of products that empower women in the battle against AIDS. Microbicides are a class of products currently under development that women apply topically to prevent transmission of HIV and other infections. Comments: james@QUEERtimes.net

What It Looks Like From Here Thom Cardwell

Bold! Multitalented! Brilliant! Unique performer! BRAVO! I'm talking about queer singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. Last summer at the Mann Music Center, I personally experienced a truly original experience seeing Wainwright in his homage to Judy Garland and was completely enthralled.
What a better queer Valentine's gift to yourself and your someone special as Wainwright offers Philadelphians his solo performance of original works in his debut on February 14, 8pm, in the Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center with works like "Foolish Love," "Dinner at Eight" and "Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk."
Rising folk-rock singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright (his younger sister) will open the show with works from her recently released album, "I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too," released in 2008.
Rufus Wainwright's sound is varied, diverse and expansive, performing what truly moves him, from cabaret-inspired works to pop-opera to lush piano arrangements and a lyrical style reminiscent of The Beatles in tunes such as "April Fools." His repertoire will also feature works from his recent album, "Release the Stars" (2007), his latest Grammy Award-nominated live album, "Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall" (2007), among other albums released through the years such as "Poses" (2001), "Want One" (2004) and "Want Two" (2005).
Since the age of 13 and having been brought up by folk music icons Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, his father and mother, Wainwright has performed worldwide, touring with such superstars as Elton John, David Byrne and Keane.
The forever creative Wainwright is currently composing a musical adaptation of Shakespeare Sonnets together with Director Robert Wilson at the Berliner Ensemble to be premiered in April 2009. His first opera, titled "Prima Donna," which depicts a day in the life of an opera singer, will premiere at the Manchester International Festival in July 2009. In early 2008, Wainwright created Blackout Sabbath, an event that promoted community awareness of environmentally-friendly practices.
Wainwright's resume includes such wide-ranging endeavors as composing original music for maverick choreographer Stephen Petronio's new work, BLOOM; guest-starring on the Pet Shop Boys' British live disc, Concrete; and contributing to the soundtracks for films, Brokeback Mountain, I Am Sam, Moulin Rouge and Shrek. Beyond recording, Wainwright has appeared in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator and Merchant Ivory's Heights.
Being a versatile performer obviously runs in Rufus' family, Martha Wainwright's expressive voice meshes elements of rock, folk, country and cabaret in an arsenal of powerful songs. "I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too" follows her self-titled debut album (2005), and "EP, Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole" (2005). In June 2006, she was acclaimed by critics for her tribute to folk legend Leonard Cohen, a personal source of inspiration, at the Los Angeles Film Festival, which later became the film and album, "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man."
In 2004, like her brother, Martha Wainwright appeared in The Aviator in which she portrays a sultry torch singer; her song "I'll Be Seeing You" was added to the film's soundtrack.
Tickets are available at the Kimmel Center box office, open daily from 10am to 6pm, by phone and online. A limited number of $10 tickets are available for every Kimmel Center Presents performances. Tickets go on sale the day of the event and can be purchased at the box office beginning at 5:30pm prior to evening curtain time. Limit one ticket per person.
I'll see you there--it's definitely a not-to-be-missed musical evening!

Restaurant Week Extended Another Week
Well, here's some good news, hot off the press, that's definitely a sign of the times that but that should make area foodies happy! Center City District Restaurant Week has just been extended from today for six more days, from February 1 to 6. Organizers said that the extension was the result of the popularity of the event among both patrons and restaurants at this economically challenged times.
What it means for area foodies is that the event will have been 12 days for diners to sample some of the city's best cuisine at just $35 for three sumptuous courses (not including tax, gratuity or alcohol).
Center City District Restaurant Week offers patrons a great value, requiring each establishment's three-course menu to have a check value of $55 or more. Some participants have even added a fourth course, all for $35, according to said R. J. White, publicist for the CCD.
White pointed out that the complete list of restaurants participating in both weeks and their menus are available online at their website. Participation of restaurants in the second week was optional so those also offering the special February 1-6 are marked on the list. Reservations can easily be made online through OpenTable.com.
"Things tend to book up quickly, so make sure that you get there early," advised White. This year's additional sponsors include: Rittenhouse Row, TD Bank, Ultra Premium Rye Whiskey, Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, Opentable.com, Philadelphia Parking Association and Philadelphia Parking Authority. Media partners include Metro, Philadelphia Magazine, Philadelphia City Paper and Philadelphia Weekly.

New Chef at Fork
There's major news breaking at Fork, 306 Market Street, in Old City Philadelphia. Co-owners Ellen Yin and Roberto Sella of Fork has appointed chef Terrence Feury to replace chef Thien Ngo upon his retirement, on February 1 (tomorrow), after overseeing the kitchen and menu at the popular bar and restaurant in Old City for the past seven years.
The Yin-Sella team said that they "are thrilled to be collaborating with Feury, and look forward to continuing to move the restaurant's new concept with his fresh, ingredient-driven - but straightforward - interpretation of Fork's new American cuisine. He will continue to support local farmers, as Chef Ngo did, and offer a seasonally changing menu."
Feury possesses an impressive culinary resume including his executive chef positions at Maia in Villanova, the Ritz Carlton in Georgetown and Philadelphia, and Striped Bass in Philadelphia. After graduation, he became well-known and respected for his expertise with seafood that he perfected in some of Manhattan's top restaurants, including famed seafood destination Le Bernadin. Feury added that he is also dedicated to producing "artisanal, hand-crafted food items like pasta, bread, charcuterie and smoked fish."
Yin said that "his extensive knowledge of pairing food with wine and beer will be a tremendous asset to the dining experience at Fork."

Mémé Gets Liquored
Chef/owner David Katz of Mémé Restaurant, at 22nd & Spruce Streets, Philadelphia, is thrilled that he has now been approved for a liquor license for beer and wine only. (At press time, he was still exploring maintaining a BYOB night once a week.) Recently, he also instituted serving lunch on Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. only, throughout the entire year of 2009.
"What is it that makes Thursdays one of the best days of the week? Is it because Thursday has always been a great day for television? Think Seinfeld! How about Friends? Or maybe it's because Thursday is the day after hump day...the day before the last day of the school week, the day that we can start making plans for the weekend. For whatever reason, Thursday is one of the best days," quipped Katz.
As chef, he said that he'll be cooking up something delicious from his rustic, New American menu, with a two course lunch special menu of choices, at $17 per person, that will include soups, salads, pasta dishes, gourmet sandwiches and grilled fishes.

Kildare's becomes Get Happy Pub
It's not just a name change but a changing of the guard at a popular destination among a cluster of restaurants and bars, off bustling South Street, Philadelphia, at Society Hill's historic Headhouse Square. Dave Magrogan, founder/owner of DMG that includes Kildare's and Doc Magrogan's Oyster House, has recently sold the Kildare's, 509-511 South Second Street, in Headhouse Square, just off South Street, the only property of DMG in Philadelphia, to Paul Lauriello, the former managing partner of Kildare's in King of Prussia.
Lauriello, together with his wife Christine, has already reopened the property as "Get Happy Pub," with an entirely new concept. Lauriello said that Comfort foods and a "Cheers" style bar scene, attracting neighborhood locals as well as tourists and others.
The husband-wife team will divide the major roles in running the bar/restaurant, assuming the duties of general manage and bartender will be Lauriello and Christine, a former caterer, will serve as the chef. "This is a good move for us as a company and for Paul and his family. As Kildare's continues to grow, our locations will be near downtown colleges with a vibrant young professional, college and residential demographic," explained Magrogan.

This isn't a big dance town. However, they are some Philadelphians that quietly and consistently have always been working to change that. Starting tomorrow, Philadelphia Dance Projects Presents '09, the innovative dance series, curated by Terry Fox, executive director of Philadelphia Dance Projects, opens on January 31 and runs through February 28. The series, Fox explained, "gives fresh insight into adventurous dance trends by showcasing contemporary dance makers from Philadelphia alongside their peers from around the country."
The unique approach to the series offers the Philadelphia's rising dance audiences the opportunity to experience new work in evening-length dance programs that pair rising Philadelphia-based talent with visiting dance artists.
This year Philadelphia Dance Projects Presents '09 is bringing an impressive list of visiting dance artists from across the country to our fair city to excite and challenge both local dance talent and the dance-going public. There's no doubt about the fact that all of the dance programs will be special experiences for everyone.
Fox has engaged such local talent as Headlong Dance Theater and Zane Booker, with his company Smoke, Lilies and Jade Arts Initiative. They will be paired with such visiting dance artists as New York-based artists Keely Garfield Dance and Jennifer Monson, Artistic Director of iLAND (Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Art, Nature and Dance); Minneapolis-based trio ARENA Dances; and the 2009 SCUBA National Touring Network for Dance artists, Charles O. Anderson / dance theatre X (Philadelphia), San Francisco's Shinichi Iova-Koga of inkBoat and Seattle's Salt Horse.
During the month-long celebration of dance, Fox said that in addition to the performances there will a number of workshops and several "informance" with participating artists.
Tickets costs $15 single for all performances, workshops and classes; $50 for all three major performances and informance.

What They Said: |
|
What happens to you after your mega-hit show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, ends its run? If you're Kyan Douglas, one of the Fab Five, you turn to the exploration and study of ancient spirituality and--you become a host of your own show, TLC's makeover show, Ten Years Younger. In METROSource (February/March 2009), Douglas, who admitted that he's always "enjoyed a robust spiritual life" is completely fascinated by how different cultures and people work out their spiritual side. Fascinated by Peruvians shamans or the American Indians of Utah, he talked about his interest in "new age" philosophy and the healing powers in the East versus the West. In the cover story, "Younger & Restless," with writing team, Tom Fitzgerald and Lorenzo Marquez, he revealed a different side to the person in front of a television camera. "I didn't realize how private a person I was until the Queer Eye thing happened. I think that while some of my castmates were immediately ready for more action, I just needed some time to myself. I did a good bit of traveling. One of my adventures took me to Costa Rica for some time on a sustainable farming community and then onto Egypt. I also bought some property in Mexico and spend part of my time there. I think my life will always be a balance of work and adventure. I am fundamentally a curious person, so I will always have to be traveling somewhere or studying something."

Oscar-nominated actress for her role in Sixth Sense, Toni Collette has multiple personalities. Well, not in life, but on the small screen, as in her latest project, Showtime's "United States of Tara," where Collette will play a married, suburban artist who is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder (a.k.a. Multiple Personality Disorder). Heavyweights Steven Spielberg will serve as executive producer and Juno's creator Diablo Cody came up with the concept for the half-hour weekly drama. Claiming to be a "naturalist" as an actor, Collette gets into the down-and-dirty aspects of this character's "alter" personalities, "a raunchy, beer-guzzling Vietnam vet; an obnoxious 15-year-old kleptomaniac, and a prim Betty Crocker housewife. Is that diverse enough for you? "Ultimately, it's about mental illness, told with an incredible amount of empathy for D.I.D.," explained Collette. Does she have problems with possibly becoming typecast for playing misfits? "Part of being an actor is representing the human race. I'd rather represent the realities of life."

Queer darling of the contemporary American fashion industry, Marc Jacobs, exercised his own budget-cutting measures by canceling his notoriously lavish and--expensive--holiday costume parties. "It's always such a huge expense" he told the editors of New York magazine (January 19-26, 2009). "My business partner, Robert Duffy's attitude was either we do it the way we've always done it or we don't do it, but we don't do it halfway." That could also mean the cancellation for his greatly celebrated elaborate runway shows, another big expense for Jacobs. But, runway show or not, the good news is that there won't be any cutbacks in producing new collections, Jacobs guarantees. "Of course, we would do a collection as if we were doing the show, but I don't really know. I feel like it's wrong not to think about the recession," admitted Jacobs. What about his price tags on his clothing and accessories? Economic crisis or not, Jacobs thinks that he offers products "at such low prices, so people can really afford go buy them."
