Dignity and Worth James Duggan

As a person who spent six years in two major
Catholic seminaries preparing for ordination and now finds himself exiled from
my own church because of my strongly held beliefs that I am created gay by God,
I read with interest a recent column by Mark Segal, the publisher of the
Philadelphia Gay News (PGN), on his chanced meeting with Archbishop Justin
Cardinal Rigali.
Segal reminds us that the Rigali and his lobbying group almost single-handedly
blocked hate-crimes and nondiscrimination legislation in Pennsylvania.
Segal states that he discussed with Rigali the statement of the Vatican to the
United Nations Human Rights Conference on Human Rights Day on December 10,
2009. According to Segal's reportage in PGN, the Cardinal needed to be
prodded to recall the statement.
The statement reminds the world that the Holy See (the Vatican) "opposes all forms of
violence and unjust discrimination against homosexual persons," and that they
"continue to call on all States and individuals to respect the rights of all
persons and to work to promote their inherent dignity and worth."
To this Rigali stated, reported Segal, "If the Holy See has that position, than
we have that position."
Quite honestly, his statement floored me. Was
Rigali saying now that the Holy See has taken a position against all forms of
violence and unjust discrimination against homosexual persons and that he too
will now uphold that position?
Need I remind the Cardinal that this has been the official teaching of the
Catholic Church for some time now? The Catechism of the Catholic Church,
issued in 1994, states the following:
"The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is
not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes
for most of them a trial. They must be
accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust
discrimination in their regard should be avoided. (paragraph 2358)
Here the Catholic Church calls on all its members, its Pastors, to stand
opposed to all forms of (unjust) discrimination. The call to accept with
respect, compassion, and sensitivity is a clear position against any violence
against queers.
Rigali must have been fully aware of this teaching when he set out to lobby
against hate-crimes and nondiscrimination legislation in Pennsylvania.
To be clear, the Holy See issued NO new directives in their statement to the
United Nations; they simply reiterated a long standing teaching, one that suffers
long on the pastoral mission of the church save for its dogmatic teaching.
Rigali must have reasoned the difference between unjust and just discrimination
and apparently believed that his lobbying efforts were in line with the
dogmatic teaching of the Church. But were they in line with the pastoral
mission of the Church? I believe not.
While I will leave to the experts the theological and philosophical debates
over the terms "just" and "unjust", I will continue to espouse the position
that to allow any individual to be fired simply because of who they find
themselves to be is pastorally unjust.
While I applaud Segal's call to Rigali to begin a dialog with our community, I
will not be fooled by the politics of the Church.
It is my hope that Segal can bring together a broad collation of interested
persons into this dialogue so long as Rigali is truly sincere in his agreement
to start such a dialogue with us.
Respecting the rights of all persons in working to promote their inherent
dignity and worth must be our common goal.

What It Looks Like From Here Thom Cardwell
copyright 2010 |

Is it really too late for resolutions for the new
year? If so, how about us all working on the new decade? Because
marking the year of 2010 isn't only for a year, it starts the next decade of
our lives. And we definitely--almost all of us--need some improvements.
Well, it all just might be all about your underwear. No, I'm not going to
suggest that you change it every day! That was the slogan from the Joe Boxer
Company. And I know you adhere to that healthy and clean practice.
When it comes to underwear, what I'm getting at is a new trend, evidently,
greatly popular in Mexico City
this past celebration of New Year's Eve! You don't have to get
embarrassed or overly excited. It's nothing kinky or fetishistic. But it
is, I find, quite curious and rather funny, even for a color-coordinated
fashionista like me!
So, evidently, there's a long time tradition in Mexico
and many other parts of Latin America that you
wear "new underwear" to ring in the new year. (Now, try to think back as
to whether or not you were joining in this tradition without even knowing about
it)
The reportage comes not from a queer source (I mean, you have to admit, that
queer men do generally take pride and interest in their underwear more often
than heterosexual men do) like magazines, Instinct or Unzipped, but, instead,
The New York Times, January 3, 2010 and they followed the lead of their own
Economix blog that was reporting on consumer spending habits in Mexico City.
There's more to the Latin American tradition of sporting new underwear on the
eve of the new year. The color of your underwear indicates, "what resolution
you're seeking for the new year," according to the reportage. That's where you
come in and, forget it, white in this world of underwear signaling doesn't
count at all.
So, as you look ahead, as many Latin Americans do, to another year, welcoming
in a new year, purchasing and sporting red underwear means you're seeking "love."
If you choose yellow underwear, it means that you're seeking "money."
Now, as a true sign of the times and a measure (an index) of what's bothering
and most prominently on the minds of most of the population of Mexico City
following this color-coded underwear tradition, yellow underwear was "flying
off the shelves at a far greater pace than red ones as Mexicans seek to rebound
financially.
"Before, we'd sell more red [underwear] but today everyone needs money more
than love," observed Javiar, according to El Universal Newspaper, and repeated
in The New York Times, "who has sold underwear at the sprawling Martinez de la
Torre market for a decade."
So I confess, when all is said and done, I don't really have any interesting
resolutions for this new year. Sorry about that!
Red, yellow, whatever color, I guess that our economic future might only be in
our underwear. Happy New Year! Happy New Decade! Goodbye, tighty whities?
Editor's Note: With such a
challenging economy at the end of 2009 and the start of 2010, this column is
meant purely as "comic relief" though the facts are true.

Chef/owner Konstantinos
Pitsillides of the ever-popular, Kanella, 1001 Spruce Street, Philadelphia,
located in the city's Washington
Square West area, will be appearing on "The Best Thing I Ever Ate," on The Food Network, airing at 10 p.m., on
January 22.
It'll be the debut of the restaurant on national television as a further
testament of the continuing growth and development of the City of Philadelphia as a
culinary destination to rival the other major cities in the country.
What's Pitsillides serving on the show? He doesn't want to spoil the surprise before
viewers tune in!
The Greek-Cypriot cuisine has been
critically acclaimed by food writers across the board ever since Pitsillides
finally got to realize his dream of opening his very own restaurant, allowing
him to create and serve "authentic,
simple, honest, rustic food" with a genuine passion for his heritage and
homeland.
Of Kanella (Greek for cinnamon), Philadelphia
Magazine wrote: "A refreshing change from the grape leaves and
iceberg-feta salads that have passed for Greek fare until now, this BYOB is
welcoming, with whitewashed walls, exposed brick and unvarnished wood. The
mishmash of neighbors and food enthusiasts fills up every seat to feast on
unfussy fare like whole grilled fish stuffed with herbs, rabbit with homemade
yogurt, and the freshly baked bread and hand-crafted tahini."
Diners have marveled at the "simplicity" of the dishes but, at the same time,
admitting that simple isn't easy to achieve.
Kanella even made it on the "59 best breakfast
places in America"
list.

It's ironic, I believe, that we no longer REALLY
live in the age of protest in America.
I mean if you think about it there are more issues to protest now, from the
corporate exploitation of the consumer to rights of privacy to queer civil
rights than ever before.
But the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and
queer community is virtually rich with a history of protest movements for
everything from protection in the workplace to HIV/AIDS funding and treatment.
"Into the
Streets: A History of Gay & Lesbian
Protest in Philadelphia and the Northeast" is a special exhibition be
presented by The John J. Wilcox, Jr. Library and
Archive of the William
Way Community Center (WWCC), 1315 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, from today through March 26.
Organizers of this exhibition announced that "Into
the Streets!" will be the first in a
series of quarterly archival exhibitions that will be featured throughout 2010
funded in part by the William Penn Foundation.
Archivist Bob
Skiba hopes that the exhibition of "rare and original documents and
ephemera" will help to tell the story of "the birth and development of our
American LGBTQ identity throughout the 20th century and out
courageous struggle for survival and equality in the face of opposition."
"Oppression, organization, militancy, liberation,
activism: these are some of the buzz words that will help viewers examine and
synthesize the political climate for LGBT people over the past 60 years, as
documented by those who lived through it," said Skiba.
On a personal note, I think that it's important
that we see, learn and understand the past in order to realize our potential,
our goals, our future from exhibitions like these so that we can comprehend
even the present.
We should all applaud the effort, opportunity and
support of this series of exhibitions that have been assembled.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.

If you're not yet a fan
of Lady Gaga, now you'll have a good
reason to become one!
This weekend, Out in AC,
the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender signature event brand of Harrah's Entertainment in Atlantic
City, NJ, will feature a "Hands Up for Marriage Equality" benefit at
Club Worship in the House of Blues at Showboat, hosted by LGBT advocate, Lady
Gaga. (Bless her heart!)
According
to reports in the media, Lady Gaga has been an outspoken supporter of queer
equality, joining the call for full civil rights protections for queer people
at the National Equality March in Washington, D.C.
last October and declaring her opposition to all homophobia and sexism in the
music industry.
"I
am honored to be able to continue to raise awareness and money for this cause and these outstanding
organizations. Organizations like
these are in the trenches every day working on behalf of all of us whether you
are LGBT or straight. Equal and full civil rights are supposed to be for
all of us," said Lady Gaga in a statement released to the media this week.
"We're truly honored to be a part of this exciting event with such
talented individuals dedicated to helping the LGBT community achieve full
equality," said Jake Kaskey,
managing director of Equality
Pennsylvania. "With everyone's support, and the dedication of
thousands of people across the Commonwealth, we will continue to lead the fight
in Pennsylvania
to protect and defend the rights of LGBT people."
Kaskey said that in addition to the famed pop star, fans and supporters
can take to the dance floor as DJ's Micheal
DeCero and Vito Fun will rock
the decks at Club Worship.
Doors
open at 10 p.m., with a minimum donation of $20 at the door. There are no
advance tickets to purchase. Guests must be 21 years of age and have valid
identification.
Organizers
announced that one hundred percent of admission to this event will benefit Empire State Pride Agenda, Equality Pennsylvania, Garden State Equality, and The Powers. All four organizations are queer civil rights advocacy nonprofits.

What They Said:

One of the darlings of
the fashion industry in America
these days is queer designer Marc Jacobs. Forever in the spotlight from
Vogue to Women's Wear Daily, the forever-creatively-talented Jacobs who is known
for hosting incredible parties and parlaying his fashions with his well-known
cutting edge runway shows recently oversaw his own "wedding ceremony" to hottie
Lorenzo Martone. But the media
reports are that it may only have been a "mock event" hosted by Larry Gagosian and dinner guests Russell Simmons and girlfriend Porschla Coleman. All of this took
place in St. Barts. Evidently, the couple got officially "engaged" in March of
2009, have been dating for a year, and proclaim to wanting to adopt children.
So what's the wait? What's the reason
for the practice wedding? Social
columnist Chiara Atik wrote of the
couple's tying of the knot: "The most
adorable part of their wedding" The cake toppers, which were molded to look
exactly like the couple, with mini-Lorenzo in a tux, and mini-Marc wearing his
signature kilt and no shirt so as to best showcase his sponge Bob Squarepants
tattoo. Also joining them on top of the cake was Jacob's pitbull, Daisy."
No one knows where the couple is honeymooning but there are plenty of photos of
them at guestofaguest.com

Vampires rule! Actor Ethan Hawke will be closer to bats than hawks
despite his surname. He, too, will be playing a vampire in the forthcoming
"Daybreakers." Film critic Monica
Weymouth reported in METRO (January 8-10, 2010) that the versatile,
independently-minded actor "plays an enlightened, smoldering-eyed bloodsucker
with the most flawless of skin, --Drac, help us--Edward, who would rather help
endangered humans than dine on them." While writers/directors/brothers Peter and
Michael Spierig said that they had
"Hawke in mind for the part" he admits to not exactly feeling like it was a
natural fit. "I've never done a movie
with so much blood. That was disgusting; it's so sticky and revolting. The
truth is that I spend my life avoiding these kinds of movies." But he
liked the immortality factor. "To walk
around with the idea that you will not die, it's a little bit like a Zen
enlightenment experience," confessed Hawke. Co-star William Dafoe (star of "Shadow of a Vampire" in 2000) plays "the
best vampire in recent memory," according to Hawke. "A lot of times, when actors play the undead, they lose all the life
inside of them. They become incredibly boring," observed Hawke. Now he has
a reputation and challenge to live up to for audiences once the film is
released.

Queer comedian Brad
Loekle is really a laugh riot and then some! There's so much
our queer community has to cry about that we need some more good-natured,
sometimes naughty, other times provocative, and even, yes, let's all be honest,
moments of raunchy comedy as the prefect remedy for all kinds of ills and heartaches!
Loekle who is as sharp as a pin gave an entertaining interview to queer
journalist Tommy Raniszewski (Out in
Jersey, December 2009-January 2010) wherein he
described himself as being "like a unicorn--only gayer." (Any reference to Tennessee Williams' "The
Glass Menagerie" is undoubtedly totally intentional.) Loekle played co-host for
three years on Sirius-XM's "Morning Jolt" to millions of listeners if you're
trying to place him. He also appeared on the original series, "The Smoking Gun"
on TruTV. Since he was asked about "projects" for 2010 the comedian gave a kind
of itemized "list." "Well, I'd
like to lose 20 pounds and be able to touch my toes. I don't know if you'll all
look forward to that. But I will tell you [that] I'm working on some ideas for
possible new show for the TruTV network. As a gay boy, I always dreamed of
having my own sin-off show. Like how Mrs. Garrett started on "The Jeffersons"
and then they made "The Facts of Life." I'm also into the writing of a few
chapters of my own book, tentatively titled, "Gay for Pay: The Misadventures of
a Barely Known Gaylebirty." I'm in talks with a couple of publishers and I
really hope it works out because the stories in this book will make Chelsea Handler's
book read like Mother Teresa's autobiography." These days he can also be
seen live and in-person on Sunday nights with his very own show, "The
Electro-Shock Therapy Comedy Hour" at the Therapy Comedy Club in Manhattan. For more information,
